Complicit

On an unexpected road trip, three estranged siblings uncover a startling family secret and larger truths about being Asian American in a post-COVID world—from the author of the “dazzling and devastating” (Chris Whitaker, New York Times bestselling author) thriller Complicit.

Early reader reviews have been wonderful — which is a relief, because I poured a lot emotionally and creatively into this book. When writing it, I wanted to explore the Great American Road Trip from the perspective of people of color. But I also wanted to address the issue of a nation that is divided politically, financially, ideologically; to encapsulate that in a single family – and ask: is it possible to repair that divide?

The novel also delves into sibling relationships, ageing parents, immigrant families, wanderlust, and the vast landscapes of the American West.  And it marks a new, more hopeful, creative direction for me, as I wanted to step out from the shadow of sexual violence and embrace themes of travel and freedom, while also questioning if the way we travel is inextricably linked to who we are and where we come from.
